How to Train for American Ninja Warrior for Beginners

Many viewers of the popular TV show NBC’s American Ninja Warrior get inspired after watching an episode. But where and how does anyone begin to train for the show?

Training at an Obstacle Course Gym

Aspiring ninja warriors can train at a gym tailored for the exciting sport, such as Obstacle Warriors in North Richland Hills, TX (opening in Summer 2024). The facility will be comprised of similar obstacles seen on “American Ninja Warrior.” Obstacles include the Salmon Ladder, Quintuple Steps, Rope Climb, Lache Bars, and more.

  • Specific Obstacle Training

Training at a Standard Gym

Ninjas can also train at a standard gym, but movements may be limited to the basics, depending on what equipment is available. Movements such as pull-ups, squats , and upper body presses will provide a good strength base.

  • Grip Strength

    • Participants can also enhance their grip strength and endurance, which is crucial in the sport of ninja warrior.

  • Pull-Ups

    • Pull-ups play an important role in ninja training, as many obstacles require participants to be able to support their bodyweight.

  • Calisthenics

    • Training calisthenics movements such as human flags, handstands, or plaches at a standard gym provide a huge benefit, as they improve body control.

  • Core Training

    • Core strength plays an important role in ninja training for any level of athlete, as many movements recruit the core muscles.


At any point, athletes of all skill levels can apply for American Ninja Warrior. The best tip is to begin training now. Workout at a standard gym, a ninja warrior gym, or both. For beginners, the focus should be to start with the basics, such as pull-ups, push-ups, squats, and presses, and build up from there.
